Breastfeeding Education

I am a volunteer at Bloomington Area Birth Services (BABS) and teach a breastfeeding class as part of the BABS childbirth education series. If you are enrolled in class at BABS, I'll see you on week seven!

I also teach a variety of private breastfeeding classes. Please call me to schedule a class to meet your needs. Partners are strongly encouraged to attend. Payment is due at time of service.

Breastfeeding for First-Time Parents
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $50

Your private class will be custom tailored for you based on your questions and concerns.

Topics covered include:
— Early Feeding Cues
— Proper Latch On
— Positioning Baby at Breast
— How to Know Baby is Getting Enough Milk
Other topics will be covered based on your individual needs.

Breastfeeding Refresher Class
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $50

Second-, third-, fourth- (and beyond) time parents can benefit from a review of newborn nursing. If you are currently or have recently nursed a toddler, revisiting the basics of the early days and weeks can be very helpful. Topics covered are the same as the above first-time parents class but can also include nursing through pregnancy and tandem nursing.

Your private class will be custom tailored for you based on your questions, areas of interest and concerns. Much can be learned from a discussion of your previous nursing experience(s) and will be included in your refresher class.

Breastfeeding Twins
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: $50

Expecting twins and have questions about breastfeeding two? All topics from the First-Time Parents class will be covered plus information about nursing multiples. We will discuss preparations during pregnancy, logistics like positioning and which baby gets which breast. We will address all of your questions and concerns and spend some time discussing preterm nursing.

'Making it Work for Nursing Mothers'
Duration: 2 hours
I teach this group class through Bloomington Area Birth Services (BABS) every other month. Cost is $25. Cost for a private class with Ann Marie is $50.

If you have a 6-week or shorter maternity leave I recommend taking this class during pregnancy. If you have a longer maternity leave I recommend this class after your baby has arrived and breastfeeding is well-established.

This class is intended for women considering or planning a return to work or school in the first year after their babies are born. Topics covered will include strategies for continued breastfeeding through full- and part-time employment or school, finding breastfeeding-friendly child care, creating breastfeeding support at work/school, making milk 'to go' (breast pump selection and use, milk storage guidelines, feeding expressed milk to babies, maintaining a plentiful milk supply), and avoiding common difficulties that may be encountered by employed/student mothers and their nursing babies. Partners and babies are encouraged to attend.
